This brown-eyed sweet boy will simply capture your heart with all the love he has to give. Sailor is a friendly charmer who’s had a hard start to life. He sometimes doesn’t have good use of his hind end but this doesn’t seem to slow him down. This happy-go-lucky little guy loves the active life and enjoys playing with other dogs his own speed, but will also happily play with his toys on his own. He enjoys a good game of tug-of-war with a human, and might join in ‘chase-me’ with gentle dogs. While he may need to be gently corrected at times when he gets too excited while playing, overall he’s quite laid back. Once he is settled and comfortable in a car, he inevitably relaxes and falls asleep. He adores meeting new people and seems to gravitate towards children, reserving his special love radar for the family he lives with. One of his favourite things to do is snuggle up with his favourite human or pup to feel secure and loved. Sailor loves attention, cuddling, playing, and is just a happy soul.
Sailor is not crated at his foster home, but he is calm and on his best behaviour when his foster family leaves the house. He is steadily improving in the house-training department and is learning how to be a good roommate with his foster siblings!
He is unknown about his interactions with cats. Sailor does not like loud or sudden noises and will bark at something that startles him.
A perfect gentleman walking on leash, Sailor loves the great outdoors in warm weather and is the perfect buddy on a sunny afternoon. He shouldn’t be taken on very long walks and prefers to spend his time outside in a secure backyard.
He sleeps well through the night on his own dog bed. His foster family describes him as ‘one of the biggest sweethearts’ they’ve ever fostered, who loves interacting with people and welcomes all belly rubs! His potential adopters should have understanding of a dog with physical disabilities and be willing and able to work with him for the rest of his life. Sailor is a wonderful boy who deserves to have a family of his own and be able to enjoy the best life he can have.
Medical Note: Sailor has had Vertebral malformation at T12 with kyphosis at T12-T13. Which is a compression of his spine due to some kind of trama. We have consulted with a couple of veterinarians on what we could do for him and unfortunately there is not much that could be done if we are to take into account his well-being and quality of life. Whoever adopts him will need understand that he does have a disability and be financially stable to take this on in the future if something were to happen down the road, they will also need to understand he cannot be climbing stairs or jumping off furniture as this can cause more damage to his spine. Sailor does have his own wheelchair that will come with him at adoption. He prefers his independence and is not a huge fan of the wheelchair but it should be used when going for longer walks.
Because of these injuries, he may still have bathroom accidents in the home (if this happens, it is usually just poop in his dog bed overnight) and can sometimes have a difficult time when going in the yard, but his foster family says that he does a pretty good job of keeping himself clean.
Medical Note: Sailor was given Pro Heart 12 on June 13, 2022 (this medication protects against heartworm disease for 12 months) and therefore only requires Nexguard each month for flea/tick prevention until May 2023. For June 2023, he will require a new prescription of Nexguard and Heartguard or Advantage Multi for year-round ongoing preventative treatment.
Donate towards Sailor’s foster home and vet care!
