Gunner’s my name and tug of war is my game! I am a fun-loving good boy with lots of energy. I’ve been told that I don’t know my own strength so I need someone who understands how to handle a larger dog.
I love all the humans and dogs I’ve come into contact with. I even get along with those silly cats. I am fully house-trained but can’t say I like a crate very much. I am not destructive while my humans are away, but I do have a favourite item I might chew on from time to time just when I get too excited. As a Retriever, I do like to retrieve things. I will bring back any toy that you throw, but I do like to play tug of war with it when I come back. I am not aggressive or possessive, I just want to play and have a good time.
I am always up for a good adventure and would really like an active family to take me for lots of walks, I currently walk about 15 kms per day. I still need some work walking well on my leash and need to learn not to try to run out unsecured doors, but I just know my forever family will continue to help me with that. I don’t always like to get into a car at first, but I know how to behave once I’m inside. When it’s quiet time and everyone’s relaxing, I do enjoy a good snuggle. I might be big, but I do love a good cuddle on the couch with my humans. I’m just so ready to be part of a loving family. Maybe I could be a part of yours?
Medical note: Gunner has been treated for heartworm disease (June 2020) and MUST stay on flea, tick and heartworm preventives year round for life in order to prevent any other problems down the line. He should remain symptom-free as long as his preventatives are given regularly each month. He was given Pro Heart 12 on November 13, 2020 (this medication protects from heartworm recurrence for 12 months) and therefore only requires Nexguard each month for flea/tick preventative until October 2021. In November 2021, he will require a new prescription of Nexguard and Heartguard or Advantage Multi for year-round treatment.
All dogs available for adoption with Second Chance Animal Rescue Windsor-Essex come fully vaccinated, including lepto, spayed/neutered, microchipped, and heartworm tested (and are on heartworm/flea preventative while in our care). At adoption, adopters receive a 6-week free trial of pet insurance.
SCAR does not have the resources to adopt animals to the United States and we can only adopt within a 200 km radius of Windsor, Ontario. Please do not apply if you do not live in Ontario, within 200 kms of Windsor.
